Mankayane – The spirit of determination and resilience was on full display today at the army recruitment drive held in Phondo Inkhundla, where two local athletes, Sifiso Ngcobo and Nokukhanya Mdluli, emerged victorious in the challenging 3.2 km race, securing their spots in the next phase of military selection.
Ngcobo, a 33-year-old runner from Lushikishini and a member of Mbombela Athletics, claimed first place in the male category. This was Ngcobo’s second attempt at the recruitment exercises, having faced disappointment in his previous try.
“I came first even the last time; however I failed on the exercises last time part, but today was my day to shine,” a jubilant Ngcobo stated after crossing the finish line.
He acknowledged the difficulty of the race, adding, “The race was hard, but I made it to the finish line and struck luck this time around.”
Banele Jele, 30, from Lushikishini, came in second at Phondo Inkhundla after conquering the 3.2km race in the ongoing army recruitment. He says he’s ready to join the army and change the situation back home.
In the female category, Mdluli, 35, from Mgazini (Phondo Inkhundla), showcased remarkable strength and perseverance, becoming the first woman to complete the 3.2 km course.
A mother of one, Mdluli’s journey to this point reflects a life of hard work, having previously been employed as a domestic worker and in textile firms in Matsapha. Her victory today marks a significant step towards a new career path, as she now advances to the vetting and health checks phase of the army recruitment process.
When asked how she prepared for the gruelling race Mdluli said the used to train hard everyday and what made it even easier is that she is a bona fide athlete. The visibly elated Mdluli bid farewell to her former employers and thanked them for the opportunities they have gave her and further wished them as she embarks on this new journey.
