Lilongwe – The Southern African Development Community has launched a four-day refresher training for election observers ahead of Malawi’s general election on September 15, 2025. The sessions are taking place from September 5 to 8 at the Bingu International Convention Centre in Lilongwe.
Observers from ten SADC member states, including Eswatini, Botswana, Lesotho, Mozambique, Namibia, South Africa, Tanzania, Zambia, the Democratic Republic of Congo, and Zimbabwe, are participating. The training, facilitated by the SADC Secretariat in partnership with the Electoral Institute for Sustainable Democracy in Africa, covers the Revised SADC Principles and Guidelines Governing Democratic Elections, the structure of the SADC Electoral Observation Mission, and Malawi’s political and security landscape.
Participants are also being briefed on Malawi’s constitutional and electoral framework before signing a Code of Conduct guiding their work. After training, observers will be deployed across all 28 districts of the country to monitor the polls, which will include the election of the president, members of parliament, and local government representatives.
