LUYENGO – A group of innovative students from the University of Eswatini’s Luyengo campus are tackling poultry waste head-on with a groundbreaking solution that is drawing national attention. Through their youth-led company, Nutri-Plume Eco Solutions Pty Ltd, the students have developed a nitrogen-rich organic fertilizer made entirely from broiler chicken feathers.
The start-up, operating from within the university’s facilities, is offering farmers an eco-friendly alternative to chemical fertilizers. Their product, Nutri-Plume, is processed through a system that sterilizes, hydrolyzes, and granulates the tough keratin protein in feathers, creating a biodegradable, slow-release fertilizer that sells for just E20 per kilogram.
Wiseman Masika, Chief Executive Officer of Nutri-Plume, said the team is focused on providing a cheaper, sustainable option for smallholder and commercial farmers while reducing the environmental burden of poultry waste.

With the backing of a E180,000 grant from the Eswatini Environment Fund under the Eswatini Environment Authority (EEA), the company is now scaling production. The funds are being used to purchase equipment, expand reach, and set up operations beyond campus.
The team’s journey began under Enactus UNESWA Luyengo, where their efforts earned them the title of 2024 Enactus National Champions. The recognition opened doors to mentorship and exposure they credit with accelerating their growth.
Their operations are now expanding beyond the university, with office and warehouse space secured in Nyakeni under Loncwala Investments. Plans are already underway to distribute through agro-dealers and digital platforms.
Unlike synthetic fertilizers, Nutri-Plume is not only cost-effective but also supports long-term soil health and avoids water contamination. The founders say they are committed to running the business even after graduation and envision Nutri-Plume reaching farms across Eswatini and the region.
