Mbabane — The Ministry of Health, in collaboration with the World Health Organization (WHO) Eswatini and the University of Eswatini (UNESWA), hosted a seminar on Thursday to mark World Food Safety Day. The event, held under the theme “Food Safety: Science in Action,” brought attention to the role of science in ensuring safe food consumption in the country.
Students from the UNESWA Faculty of Health Sciences presented findings from research conducted across various food outlets in Eswatini. The studies revealed concerning gaps in food handling and processing, particularly within the informal sector, raising potential risks of foodborne illnesses.
Minister of Health Mduduzi Matsebula, who attended the seminar, said food safety must be prioritised alongside food security. He added that ensuring food hygiene is critical in preventing diarrhoeal and other food-related diseases.
