PIGG’S PEAK – An 18-month-old baby’s mother was charged with negligence after she threw the minor into the window of baby daddy’s moving car.
Bongiwe Nyawo, a 29-year-old mother, was arrested and charged for violating Section 48 (1) of the Children Protection and Welfare Act on April 8, 2025 by the Pigg’s Peak police.
Section 48(1) states, “Any person who, being a person having the care of a child abuses, neglects, abandons or exposes the child in a manner likely to cause the child physical, psychological or emotional injury or causes or permits the child to be so abused, neglected, abandoned or exposed commits an offence and is liable on conviction for the offence to a community based sanction or to imprisonment for a term of not less than five years.”
The complainant, Celumusa Matsebula, the minor’s father, said they had an argument at Hofo Supermarket regarding another issue.
Nyawo was said to have been seen tossing the baby into the moving car as Matsebula drove away from the police station around 6 PM.
She has since been sentenced by Magistrate Nkosingiphile Maseko to 1000 hours of community service who condemned her “irresponsible and reckless” behavior.
