Mbabane: Police roadblocks lasted hours in many routes leading to Mbabane CBD on Monday with the police demanding permits to enter the city in a bid to make sure that people adhere to the partial lockdown regulations.
The police also screened motorists and passengers in a countrywide swoop on unnecessary trips to the city. In addition, the police questioned anyone who didn’t wear a mask, passenger or non-passenger were encouraged to instantly purchase one before they could be confronted by the law enforcers.
A number of motorists were turned back after they failed to produce permits allowing them to travel to the city center, or give valid reasons why they were driving.
Across the country, police have begun their crackdown on motorists to ensure measures of the revoked relaxed lockdown are adhered to, following the publics’ relaxed attitude thus risking contracting the COVID-19 virus. The Ministry of Health has reported that the rapidity at which confirmed cases are rising is alarming with 16 confirmed cases recorded in one day, on April 26.
NATCOM William Tsintsibala Dlamini said all three forces would be visible in all parts of the country and would be strict on people’s movements, all in adherence to the newly amended regulations and guidelines that were put forth by the Ministries of Health, Public Works and Commerce.
At the time of compiling this report, police who were interviewed told Independent News that from the screenings they conducted on motorists as well as passengers, none were found to have recorded a high temperature. Most of the people screened recorded normal body temperature of 38 Degrees Celsius, while a reasonable number showed a record minus or 36 degrees Celsius. Should somebody be found to show a high temperature, health practitioners would be called to put that individual in isolation.
The police were also seen entering a number of businesses around the city center supposedly in a mission to find out if businesses were operating as per the regulations. Government seems lent on effecting stricture measures as the three forces showed a no compromise attitude in enforcing the new regulations.
