Mbabane – The Baphalali Eswatini Red Cross Society is on the trajectory to meet 250 000 Emaswati in desperate need for food.
This transpired at the donation ceremony at Nkilongo where the most destitute received food rations from the society which included rice sourced through a collaboration between the government and World Vision. Part of the recipients were child-headed families, the elderly individuals, and people living with disabilities. Red Cross’ Celani Malaza said this was part of the nationwide initiative that was set to reach 250 000 Emaswati across various regions.
The Vulnerability Assessment Committee (VAC) 2024 report projected the number to rise to 303 700 between October 2024 and March 2025. Malaza highlighted the urgent need for such aid. He pointed to the 2024 food report which indicated that 25 percent of the population would require food donations this year due to devastating droughts and hailstorms that destroyed harvests.
Malaza explained that the Red Cross had registered eligible recipients in regions, including Nkilongo, last December. The food parcels brought immediate sustenance and hope to those struggling.
The selection criteria were clear, he said, and it sought out the elderly people who are solely dependent on government grants, child-headed families, and households led by disabled individuals.
