Local farmers in Shiseweni have welcomed a boost to their aquaculture efforts following a harvest of genetically improved Mozambique tilapia, supported by the Taiwan Technical Mission.
The harvested fish, which were cultivated under Taiwan’s ongoing aquaculture partnership with Eswatini, showed more than a 10 percent size improvement compared to native strains. Farmers also reported better survival rates and fish quality, contributing to growing interest in fish farming in rural communities.
Officials from the Taiwan Technical Mission joined farmers at the harvest site this week, sharing technical expertise and assessing the viability of future initiatives aimed at both food production and tourism.
As part of the visit, the team also conducted a site inspection at a nearby lodge dam. The goal is to introduce recreational fishing as a way to stimulate local tourism and offer alternative income sources for residents.
