Kwaluseni – The Student Representative Council (SRC) at the University of Eswatini (UNESWA) Kwaluseni Campus has expressed serious health concerns regarding the use of water from tanks and boreholes by students.
On Wednesday, the campus maintenance team issued a memo informing the university community of water interruptions due to ongoing repairs for multiple pipe leaks and breakages. As a result, tap water has been suspended, although learning and working activities will continue as scheduled.
In the interim, the university has provided water tanks at strategic locations and is utilising its boreholes. Philip Mamba, the UNESWA Physical Planner, urged students and staff to be patient as the maintenance team works diligently to resolve the issues. He also emphasised the importance of preventing water loss by ensuring all taps are closed when not in use.
However, SRC Secretary Zandile Dlamini reported to Independent News that, as of Friday, May 9, 2025, running water had still not been restored. She noted that students had been without running water for three consecutive days last week and expressed concerns about the quality of the alternative water sources provided.
“We appreciate the administration’s efforts in supplying boreholes and water tanks, but we are concerned about whether this water is properly purified,” Dlamini stated.
She also highlighted that the condition of the bathrooms has deteriorated, posing significant health hazards and rendering them unusable. The SRC continues to advocate for improved water quality to ensure the health and safety of all students at the Kwaluseni campus, Dlamini said.
