Mbabane: As the country scrambles for enough water to help fight the spread of the deadly coronavirus pandemic, Eswatini Water Services Corporation (EWSC) is disconnecting water for owing businesses and residential areas in urban areas.
According to EWSC Public Affairs and Customer Service Manager Nomahlubi Matiwane, the exercise is meant to encourage the affording class to settle their arrears for the continued smooth supply of water across the country. Matiwane revealed that the corporation was owed over E200 million, money that essential for the supply of the human necessity even to rural areas where the population density of the poor is situated.
The disconnection exercise started on Wednesday, something that has been meant with mixed reactions from EmaSwati.
“We are disconnecting mainly in the urban areas where presumably citizens can afford so that the continued smooth supply of water can roll-out country wide and reach the poorest of the poor. As a corporation, we are supplying free water in strategic areas in the help to curb the spread of COVID-19 and we can only encourage EmaSwati to pay as we (EWSC) depend on the money to supply,” Matiwane said.
For the next six months, in conjunction with the National Disaster Management Agency (NDMA), EWSC will be providing free hand-washing water through stationery tanks strategically placed across the country. Also, EWSC has contributed a mouthwatering E100 000 to the COVID-19 National Resource Mobilisation Committee headed by Phil Mnisi.
