Komatipoort – Travellers heading to Mozambique for the holidays are facing long queues and delays at the Lebombo Border Post, with many expressing frustration over slow processing times. The border, which sees heavy traffic during the festive season, is processing more than 25,000 people a day, causing long waits for those eager to reunite with family and enjoy their vacations.

The Border Management Authority (BMA) has increased staffing and extended hours to manage the surge, but with truck queues stretching for kilometres along the N4, the delays persist. “There aren’t enough staff to handle the crowds,” said one traveller, France Magaya. “We can’t use the same narrow roads for trucks and cars, causing breakdowns and further delays.”

The congestion is compounded by the mix of passenger vehicles, buses, and trucks, which causes slow-moving traffic on the N4. The heavy flow of goods and holidaymakers heading to Mozambique’s popular beach destinations has created additional pressure. For locals in Komatipoort, the increased traffic provides an economic boost, with businesses benefiting from the influx of tourists and freight.

The BMA has deployed extra officers and even drones to monitor the situation. Commissioner Dr. Michael Masiapato was stationed at Lebombo from December 21 to 25 to oversee the management of the border. Despite these efforts, travellers are advised to plan ahead, carry necessary documents, and avoid peak travel times when possible to minimize delays.
