MBABANE – Dr. Jono Pons, a seasoned ophthalmologist with over 25 years of experience in the kingdom of Eswatini, has launched a new eye care ministry called Grace Vision. The initiative comes after he left a hospital system that no longer supported providing care for the nation’s poor, a calling he felt God had placed on his life.
The new ministry aims to address the growing eye care crisis in the region. Dr. Pons recounted his journey and shared his testimony at a recent conference, where he spoke of a divine calling to serve the underserved. He explained that Grace Vision was created to provide essential eye care to communities in Eswatini and Mozambique, particularly those with limited access to health services.
Dr. Pons detailed how the ministry came to be, citing a combination of faith, perseverance, and supernatural provision. He spoke of God’s guidance at every turn, which led to the acquisition of clinics, surgical equipment, and dedicated teams. The Christian Ophthalmology Society’s FAM program was also instrumental, providing crucial support that helped stabilize the startup nonprofit.
The ophthalmologist also explained that the ministry’s model is to provide both excellent service and the gospel of Christ to those in need. Grace Vision’s services include outreach programs, training for young doctors, and research to improve eye care delivery.
Dr. Pons specifically mentioned a donation of a microscope from a fellow doctor and other significant contributions that have allowed the ministry to expand its services. The support has also helped secure training for three new doctors, purchase a car for outreach, and establish optometry services. The ministry has also extended its support to other medical disciplines, such as dentistry and orthopedics, to better serve communities.
Dr. Pons urged others to trust their calling, step into missions, and support those serving the “least of these.” He announced that a 40-foot container, currently half-full in Ohio, is available for donations of medical equipment to aid in the ministry’s expansion..
