Mbabane: The country continues to record a sharp increase in the number of COVID-19 cases, as it continues to experience a third wave of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The rate of the virus spread seems to be gaining momentum each day.

According to the COVID-19 daily reports from the ministry of health, over the past 14 days from July 13, to July 26 2021, the country has recorded about 3067 COVID-19 positive cases. The number of deaths recorded in the same period is 63.

The number of deaths recorded suggests that every 5 hours a person dies of COVID-19 in the country, while the infection rate in the same period suggests that every 6 minutes, one person gets infected by the covid-19 virus.

According to the reports, the higher number of daily cases recorded was on July 24, 2021, where the country recorded about 531 COVID-19 positive cases after 1198 tests were conducted. 342 positive cases were recorded on 26 July after 1114 tests were conducted, 318 cases were recorded on 25 July where 812 tests were conducted. Worth noting is that the average number of daily covid 19 positive cases over the period was about 220 cases.

The daily reports released on July 26, 2021, show that the country recorded a total of 23 347 confirmed cases and 759 deaths since the virus was discovered.

The reports also show that the Hhohho Region continues to have the highest number of recorded cases, with 9257 followed by Manzini with 8815 while Lubombo has 2973 and Shiselweni at 2282.

With a population of about 1,3 million people in Eswatini,  as of July 26, 2021, the country has 38326 people who have received their first dose of the COVID-19 vaccine. About 27341 people have received their first and second dose of the vaccine.

As the virus continues to be sure in the country, and with the government working hard to ensure vaccination of the population,  the minister of health Lizzie Nkosi last week announced that COVID-19 vaccination has been open to all emaSwati aged 18 and above.

The minister stated that people are expected to register for the vaccines using the COVID-19 vaccination registration link: www.eswatinihealth.org.

She also announced that the country was expecting a delivery of 302 400 doses of the Johnson and Johnson vaccine donated by the government of the United States of America through the COVAX facility dose-sharing mechanism by the end of July.

With these doses, the ministry will target all frontline workers across the different sectors of the economy

The minister also stated that the target is to administer all these doses by the end of August.

From the beginning of August, the minister said the government will be receiving tranches of the AstraZeneca vaccines which will total 170 000 doses by the end of August and 100 620 doses of the Pfizer BioNTech vaccine by the end of September.

As the country is experiencing a third wave of the covid-19 virus, the ministry of health continues to warn people that there was a notable increase in the daily number of confirmed cases hence the country was experiencing a third wave. The public is always urged to adhere to all regulations to prevent a possible spread of the virus.

The Ministry continues to urge the public to continue adhering to all health measures given by the ministry of health and the World Health Organization which includes washing hands with running water and soap, avoid unnecessary movements, practice social distancing.
