Mbabane: Minister of Health Lizzie Nkosi says the COVID-19 third wave is expected to hit the Kingdom of Eswatini in May.

Nkosi was speaking at the Cabinet offices on Thursday when addressing the media, where she said the purpose of the vaccination was to help in preventing Emaswati from getting too ill and hospitalisation when the third wave hits the country.

Nkosi said the vaccination will also help to relief the pressure on the country’s health system.

However, the Minister could not give much details to what will attribute to the third wave but the further relaxation of the lockdown might have an impact.

The third wave was reported to have already hit one African state which is Kenya. Two days ago it was reported that the third wave has hit that country seven (7) new deaths and 1 064 cases were recorded in one day.

Meanwhile, other countries like Germany and Italy had also confirmed the third wave. South African professor Alex van den Heever told the Citizen that excess death data showed that there were already signs of the third wave in the Free State and Western Cape.

The Kingdom of Eswatini has been seeing a decline in the number of new cases and deaths as on Wednesday, 14 new cases were reported with no new deaths. This puts the number of active cases to stay at 695.
