Mbabane – Community Health Care Volunteers in Mbabane conducted 16,647 home visits during the last financial year, taking health services and support directly to households across the city.
The figure was revealed by the Mayor of Mbabane Thulani Mkhontfo during the Community Health Care Volunteers’ Graduation and Appreciation Day held at the Prince of Wales Stadium.
The Mayor said the volunteers had already conducted 4,235 home visits during the first quarter of the current financial year.
He said the figures represented more than statistics, as each visit involved a person, family or household receiving care, information, support or a link to an essential service.
Community Health Care Volunteers assist with health education, community mobilisation, immunisation and health campaigns, outreach services, home-based care and referring residents to appropriate health facilities.
The Mayor said their work demonstrated that community healthcare was not limited to clinics and hospitals, but also took place in people’s homes and communities.
He said the volunteers often worked quietly, visiting households, supporting vulnerable residents, following up on patients and helping families navigate the health system.
The Mayor encouraged residents to welcome the volunteers when they visit their homes, listen to their guidance and work with them.
“Health is a shared responsibility,” he said.
He said the 16,647 home visits recorded in one year demonstrated the amount of work being done by the volunteers within Mbabane communities.
The Mayor said the Municipal Council remained committed to working with the Ministry of Health, development partners and communities to strengthen primary and community-based healthcare.
