Mbabane: The Kingdom of Eswatini has celebrated the United Nations 75th anniversary.
The celebration was held at the Eswatini UN headquarters in Mbabane and was attended by Eswatini Prime Minister Ambrose Mandvulo Dlamini, Cabinet Ministers, top government officials, The UN Resident Coordinator Nathalie Ndongo-Seh, UN dignitaries and non-governmental organizations under the United Nations.
The United Nations is an international organization founded in October 24, 1945 after the Second World War by 51 countries committed to maintaining international peace and security, developing friendly relations among nations and promoting social progress, better living standards and human rights.
Since then member states have committed working together to bring peace to the world.
This year marked the 75years since its formation and this year’s 75th Anniversary is celebrated under the theme, “The future we want, the United Nations we need: Reaffirming our Collective Commitment to Multilateralism’.
Earlier, member states agreed to hold a high-level virtual event on September 21, to mark the UN’s 75th anniversary, and to adopt a forward-looking political declaration which will be negotiated through an intergovernmental process on: “The future we want, the United Nations we need: reaffirming our collective commitment to multilateralism”.
Speaking during the UN Celebration, Prime Minister Ambrose Mandvulo Dlamini thanked the United Nations for its consistency in supporting Eswatini even during hard times.
The Premier noted that the United Nations has been consistent in supporting development efforts and walking with Eswatini along the journey of uplifting the standard of living of all Emaswati.
This also follows that on October 22, 2020 Eswatini signed the United Nations Sustainable Development Cooperation Framework for the period 2021-2025, worth over 1.4 billion a commitment to working together for the common good of all Emaswati.
The Premier congratulated the UN family and all partners on the successful signing of the Cooperation Framework after wide consultations that took into account the plans and strategies that Government has put in place to enhance economic development and the improve the welfare of all Emaswati.
“We remain confident that such cooperation will go a long way in transforming the lives of Emaswati, ensuring that we are a prosperous nation while, protecting the planet and all people across the world”.
“We commend the UN for pledging to continue supporting the post-COVID-19 Economic Recovery Plan launched by Government in the month of August. These collaborative efforts will ensure that we recover better from the pandemic and that there are fewer people affected – and that we leave no one behind”.
He urged countries of the world to stick to the ideals of the United Nations to ensure the achievement of peace, prosperity and ending hunger.
Dlamini noted that global peace and stability remains a challenge, but urged countries not to lose sight of the ideals of this organization to ensure that all of humanity enjoys the benefits of peace and prosperity and that no one goes to bed hungry.
The UN RC Nathalie Ndongo-Seh also thanked Eswatini for its cooperation, saying in solidarity with His Majesty’s Government they looked forward to a better future for all. She said the UN’s vision is to support ‘a prosperous, just and resilient Eswatini where no one is left behind.
Ndongo-She noted that the celebration was symbolic, as the gathering was a t time of suffering and devastation around the world caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.
She said it was in the same spirit the UN was born 75 years ago after the Second World War, at a time when devastation filled the world, 51 countries come together, joined in solidarity and committed to maintain peace and security, promote social progress and ensure a better living standards and human rights.
Amidst the celebration Ndongo-Seh noted that there was a still long way to go, as the world is still faced with immense gender inequality in leadership, the climate crisis, and bio diversity disappearing, hatred and misinformation. “On top of that we face an unprecedented health, humanitarian and COVID-19 pandemic”, she said.
She thanked Eswatini for the unity and cooperation displayed during the covid-19 pandemic, which has infected over 40 million people worldwide and over 1million has lost lives.
