MBABANE – Senator Sphelele Mkhonta has called for stronger action against gender-based violence and discrimination, saying women and girls must be afforded equal rights, opportunities and protection in society.
Mkhonta made the call following the Eswatini Medical Christian University (EMCU) orientation for the 2026 first-year students, where he used the occasion to speak on the importance of equality as the country observes Women’s Month.
He said the fight for gender equality should go beyond words, with greater action and support needed to ensure that women and girls are protected from discrimination and violence.
“I raise my voice not so I can shout, but so that those without a voice can be heard,” Mkhonta said.
He called for equality for all people regardless of gender, including equal access to rights, resources, opportunities and justice.
Mkhonta said women should also receive fair treatment in the workplace and have the same opportunities to participate meaningfully in society.
He further called on society to work collectively towards ending gender-based violence and creating safer environments for women and girls.
“We call for equality for everyone in society, ensuring that women and girls are free from discrimination and violence,” he said.
Call for collective action
Mkhonta said the continued inequality that places women in inferior positions remains a concern despite years of calls for change.
He said addressing the problem requires more than annual commemorations, but sustained action, determination and support for women.
“The inequality that places women as being inferior indeed remains. Despite the many calls, this still means more action, determination and support given to women for the benefit of all of us,” he said.
He said the responsibility of creating a more equal society should not be left to women alone, but should involve communities, institutions and society as a whole.
Mkhonta’s remarks come as the country observes Women’s Month, a period dedicated to reflecting on the challenges faced by women and promoting their rights and participation in society.
He also called for concerted efforts to protect women and girls from gender-based violence, saying society must work towards environments where they can live, learn and work without fear of violence.
Mkhonta concluded by wishing women a happy Women’s Month and calling for continued efforts towards equality and justice for all.
