South African rapper Mthembeni Ndevu, popularly known as Emtee, has been granted bail of R1,000 after appearing in the Midrand Magistrate’s Court on allegations that he violated a protection order obtained by his estranged wife, Nicole Chinsamy.
According to reports first published by Sowetan and TimesLIVE, the award-winning musician spent a night in custody at the Midrand Police Station before making his court appearance on Thursday.
Emtee is accused of breaching a protection order that was reportedly granted in 2023. The order allegedly prohibits him from verbally abusing Chinsamy or harassing her through social media platforms.
The rapper’s court appearance attracted support from several close associates, including fellow musician Sjava, family members and his manager, who were present in court during the proceedings.
As part of his release conditions, Emtee has been ordered not to post or publish any content on social media relating to Chinsamy, whether directly or indirectly. He has also been instructed to refrain from communicating with her and to immediately remove any online content concerning her. The court reportedly warned that any violation of the bail conditions could result in his arrest.
A source quoted by TimesLIVE alleged that Emtee handed himself over to police on Wednesday morning before being formally charged with contravening the protection order.
The case follows a series of public disputes between the rapper and Chinsamy, many of which have played out on social media in recent months. Earlier this month, Emtee made headlines after posting allegations against the mother of his children on Instagram, claims that generated widespread debate online.
According to sources cited by TimesLIVE, the latest allegations stem from an incident on June 4 at Chinsamy’s Midrand residence. It is alleged that Emtee entered the property unexpectedly while Chinsamy was bathing one of their children. Sources further alleged that he took a knife from the kitchen and made threats directed at members of her family. These allegations have not yet been tested in court.
The developments come just days after Emtee drew public attention by cutting off his trademark dreadlocks, a move that sparked speculation among fans about changes in his personal life.
