A 25-year-old man from Mpolonjeni has been charged with two counts of attempted murder following a violent attack on his ex-girlfriend and her friend.
According to police information, the suspect allegedly attacked the two 26-year-old women with a bush knife and a knife on May 14, 2026, at Mpolonjeni.
Police said the suspect was previously in a relationship with one of the victims and allegedly became bitter after the relationship ended several months ago. It is alleged that he was unhappy that the woman had moved on and had warned her against openly associating with her new boyfriend in the area, saying it was disrespectful to him.
On the day of the incident, the suspect allegedly discovered that the woman’s new boyfriend had once again visited her residence. He reportedly went to her rented flat where the victim, who works as a braider, opened the door believing it was one of her clients.
Police allege that the suspect forced his way into the house and locked the door while the victim and her friend were inside.
The suspect allegedly first confronted the victim’s friend, accusing her of advising the woman to leave him because of his allegedly abusive behaviour. He then allegedly produced a bush knife and attacked his former girlfriend, hacking her before stabbing her once in the back.
Police further allege that the suspect then turned on the friend, hacking her twice on the head and left arm.
The two women were rescued by neighbouring tenants who reportedly heard screams and commotion coming from the flat during the attack.
Police officers responded to the scene and arrested the suspect immediately.
The police further revealed that this was allegedly not the first violent incident involving the suspect and his ex-girlfriend. In March this year, he allegedly strangled the woman during another altercation, but the matter was never reported after the suspect’s mother reportedly pleaded with the victim not to open a case.
The suspect is expected to appear in court.
