Mbabane: The Minister of Tourism and Environmental Affairs, Moses Vilakati has announced that there will be a series of tourism events happening during the month of September, leading to 27 September which is the official World Tourism Day.

Vilakati was speaking at Mahamba George in Nhlangano during the launch of the tourism month, where he officially declared September as a tourism month in Eswatini.

Vilakati said during the month of September there will be more promotions focused on domestic tourism, as a result a domestic tourism campaign has been launched themed “ A wonder Awaits You, Explore it.

The campaign aims to encourage emaSwati to explore and visit tourist’s attraction arrears within Eswatini, under the guidance of health and safety protocols to prevent the spread of COVID-19.

As part of the ongoing domestic tourism campaigns, to entice emaSwati, establishments has offered significant discounts up to 50 percent on accommodation.

He encouraged emaSwati to explore their country and heed to the health and safety guidelines to prevent the spread of COVID-19.

Vilakati said this year marked the 40th global tourism month celebration. The Tourism Month is celebrated annually in September, and provides a heightened month-long focus on the importance of the tourism sector to the economy.

The theme for this year’s World Tourism Day is “Tourism and Rural development”, as declared by the United Nations World Tourism organization (UNWTO)

For the past 40 years, Vilakati said World Tourism Day has highlighted the power of tourism and its touch on almost every parts of society.

In line with the theme for this year “Tourism and Rural Development”, Vilakati said tourism must be aligned to help benefit rural communities. “Tourism and rural development is more relevant than ever as tourism sector faces up to the COVID-19 pandemic”.

Since 1980, the United Nations World Tourism Organization has celebrated World Tourism Day as international observances on September 27. World Tourism Day (WTD is an annual celebration globally to foster an awareness among communities of the importance of tourism and its socio-economic value. The purpose of this day is to raise awareness on the role of tourism within the international community and to demonstrate how it affects social, cultural, political and economic values worldwide.
