NSENGA – The E4.3 million Nsenga Water Scheme facilitated through the Regional Development Fund (RDF), is benefitting six chiefdoms under the Nkhomiyahlaba Constituency.
This landmark scheme, which was officially handed over to the Constituency by RDF officers under the Microprojects Unit recently, is servicing close to 7000 residents. For the record, Nkhomiyahlaba is under the Manzini region.
Noteworthy is that the RDF mandate is carried out by both Microprojects and the Ministry of Tinkhundla and Administration led by Minister Sikhumbuzo Dlamini. Microprojects is a department under the Ministry of Economic Planning and Development.
Nkhomiyahlaba Member of Parliament (MP) Mduduzi Dlamini hailed the project as remarkable, thanking government for bringing huge water relief for the benefitting residents in his community. The hand-over ceremony was attended by an impressive number of local residents, including representatives from the different chiefdoms benefiting from the scheme.
“My appreciation goes to Microprojects, through which we were able to secure the funding. RDF works under both Microprojects and the Tinkhundla Ministry, so we appreciate the support extended to our constituency,” he said.
The legislator added that the benefits of the water scheme were not only demonstrated by the impressive number of beneficiaries (six chiefdoms) but the fact that after decades of waiting, residents will finally have access to clean potable water.
“Before, residents relied on unhealthy and dirty water from the nearby river and this exposed them to serious health issues. That is why we had a lot of diarrhoea cases because we grew up using river water for cooking and bathing as well. It is for this reason that the water scheme is very essential and timely,” the MP said.
Further, Dlamini revealed that when this water scheme was commissioned, each household was requested to contribute E650 towards maintenance of the project.
“Now that it has been finished, each household is expected to contribute E50 monthly for maintenance costs. We are hopeful and trust that the benefiting households will adhere to this requirement to ensure longevity of the facility,” he appealed.
The MP added that through the E4.3 million funding, a huge tank was purchased and this is where water transmitted to the different households comes from. He said water pipes have been used to connect the households with the water tank.
“Nsenga Water Scheme is actually an extension of a similar project that benefited Sigombeni residents through funding by Taiwan. This means the whole project is now valued at E62 million because Sigombeni falls under Nkhomiyahlaba Constituency. This has brought whole lot of excitement among residents because their prayers have finally been answered by His Majesty’s government,” he added.
