Residents of Hhukwini gathered today for the official ministerial handover of the “Planting for the Future” project, an environmental initiative supported through the Eswatini Environment Fund and implemented with the involvement of the Eswatini Environment Authority.
The project, which received E200,000 in funding, is led by young people from the community and focuses on establishing tree nurseries aimed at restoring the environment and promoting sustainable land management. The initiative forms part of ongoing efforts across the country to involve communities in protecting natural resources while addressing climate related challenges.
Two nurseries have already been established in Lamgabhi and Dlangeni. The facilities are expected to support local environmental restoration while creating opportunities for young people to participate directly in conservation work within their communities.
Implementation of the project is being carried out with the assistance of BoMake Rural Projects. The organisation is working closely with local youth groups to build practical skills in tree propagation, climate resilience and sustainable livelihood development.
During the handover ceremony, the Chairperson of the Board of Trustees of the Environment Fund spoke about the role of communities in environmental protection.
The Chairperson said the Fund seeks to ensure that “environmental solutions are locally driven and communities take a leading role in safeguarding the environment for present and future generations.”
