LOS ANGELES — South African global sensation Tyla has secured her second Grammy Award after winning Best African Music Performance at the 2026 Grammy Awards for her hit single Push 2 Start.
The 24-year-old singer was unable to accept the award in person after being delayed by an overwhelming number of red-carpet interviews, which caused her to miss the Premiere ceremony held at the Peacock Theatre in Los Angeles, California, where the category was announced.
Push 2 Start has emerged as one of Africa’s biggest musical exports of the year, amassing over 440 million streams on Spotify and tens of millions of views on YouTube. The song’s global success has further cemented Tyla’s status as one of the continent’s most influential pop stars.
In a highly competitive category, Tyla triumphed over fellow nominees Burna Boy (Love), Davido featuring Omah Lay (With You), Eddy Kenzo and Mehran Matin (Hope & Love), and Ayra Starr featuring Wizkid (Gimme Dat).
Despite missing the ceremony, Tyla made a striking impression on the red carpet, dazzling in a look styled by Ronnie Hart. She wore a Dsquared2 Fall/Winter 2013 collection dress, featuring a feathered skirt flowing into a dramatic train, paired with a low-dipping neckline accented by gold embellishments.
The Best African Music Performance category, introduced in recent years to recognise the growing global influence of African music, has quickly become one of the Grammys’ most competitive and celebrated honours.
Meanwhile, Grammy host Trevor Noah, who was nominated for Best Audio Book, Narration and Storytelling Recording for Into the Uncut Grass, lost out to His Holiness the Dalai Lama, who won the award for Meditations: The Reflections of His Holiness the Dalai Lama during the Premiere ceremony.
