Los Angeles – Segregation-era vampire thriller Sinners, starring Michael B Jordan, has made history with a record 16 Oscar nominations, setting a new high for a single film in one year, according to Times LIVE.
The Warner Bros production positions Sinners as the frontrunner ahead of the March 15 Academy Awards, where it will compete for Best Picture alongside One Battle After Another, Frankenstein, Hamnet, Marty Supreme, Bugonia, F1, The Secret Agent, Sentimental Value and Train Dreams.
Times LIVE reports that the previous record of 14 nominations was held jointly by All About Eve (1950), Titanic (1997) and La La Land (2016).
Michael B Jordan earned a Best Actor nomination for his dual role as twin brothers running a juke joint in 1930s Mississippi. The film also received major nominations for Best Director for Ryan Coogler, Best Supporting Actor for Delroy Lindo and Best Supporting Actress for Wunmi Mosaku.
Technical and creative categories recognised the film as well, including Best Cinematography, Costume Design, Original Screenplay and Visual Effects, reflecting its wide appeal across Academy voting branches, Times LIVE noted.
Jordan faces competition in the Best Actor category from Leonardo DiCaprio for One Battle After Another, which earned 13 nominations, and Timothée Chalamet for Marty Supreme. In the Best Actress race, Jessie Buckley received a nod for Hamnet, while Kate Hudson was recognised for Song Sung Blue.
Approximately 10,000 members of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences will vote for winners. The ceremony will be broadcast live on ABC with comedian Conan O’Brien returning as host for the second consecutive year.
Studio-wise, Warner Bros Discovery led with 30 nominations despite currently being involved in a high-profile bidding war with Netflix and Paramount Skydance, Times LIVE reported. Netflix, still seeking its first Best Picture win, earned nine nominations for Frankenstein and continues to release films in theatres for awards eligibility.
