Manzini – Mbabane Highlanders head coach Ernest Mavuso reflected on his team’s one-nil defeat to Mbabane Swallows in the Mbabane Derby on Sunday afternoon, describing the match as challenging but instructive for his side.
The clash took place at the Mavuso Sports Centre, where Swallows secured the only goal of the match and claimed three points in a tightly contested encounter.
Mavuso said his players showed glimpses of quality but struggled to convert opportunities into goals.
“Eyi, it was a tough game but very good,” said Mavuso. “It showed us where our team is strong and also where we still need to improve. We played against Mbabane Swallows as we expected, but we could not score.”
He acknowledged the impact of Swallows being reduced to ten men early in the second half after a red card, which forced Highlanders to adjust their strategy.
“Very tough. They were organised, shifting, covering, and balancing perfectly. We could not take anything away from that,” Mavuso said. “We denied all open scoring chances and tried to play a passing game in front of them. They worked hard and we saw where we need to improve for the next time we face a situation like this.”
Mavuso also commented on new signings, noting that some players are still adapting to the team but showing potential to strengthen Highlanders in future matches.
“The first match for some of them was about adapting. Going forward, we will have them ready,” he said. “There were many positives today. Everyone at the stadium could see where the team is sharp and where we need work. We hope to compete strongly in the second round.”
He thanked fans for their support and encouraged continued backing as Highlanders prepare for upcoming fixtures.
“Thank you to everyone who supports Mbabane Highlanders. What we saw today will help us build better,” Mavuso said.
