MASERU – The Ministry of Information, Communications, Science, Technology and Innovation (MICSTI) has outlined ambitious plans for 2026, including automating 25 government services and completing 22 e-service centres nationwide.
Principal Secretary Kanono Ramashamole said the ministry will begin rolling out a national digital ID after the pilot phase and start construction of a new national broadcasting building while completing the government Security Operations Centre.
To support the creative economy, MICSTI plans to launch a Digital Outreach Studio for podcasting, photography and video editing, while expanding robotics and AI support in schools and universities.
Reflecting on 2025, Ramashamole noted key achievements, including approval of the Broadband and Infrastructure Sharing Policy to reduce internet costs and accelerate connectivity, adoption of a National AI Policy for ethical and inclusive AI use, and implementation of the National Digital Transformation Strategy (2024-2030).
The ministry also launched the National Cybersecurity Centre and the National Computer Incident Response Team to protect digital identities and government data. An MoU with India’s MeitY will enhance Digital Public Infrastructure, e-government platforms, and capacity building.
Connectivity improvements included 18 new mobile base stations, including in Quthing and Mafeteng, and laying 96 kilometres of fiber optic cable to Thaba Tseka. High-speed internet was also expanded to schools and universities.
Ramashamole highlighted initiatives supporting entrepreneurs and researchers, such as opening the Innovation Centre (UNIPOD) and rolling out “AI for Good” programmes and youth digital skills training. Radio Lesotho and Ultimate FM transmissions were restored in Mokhotlong and Thaba-Tseka, alongside upgrades to LNBS production facilities.
He said while 2025 laid the groundwork, 2026 will focus on scaling up delivery and building Lesotho’s digital future, aligning with the ministry’s mission to drive economic growth, job creation, and national competitiveness through technology.
