Windhoek – The Namibian government, alongside the Ministry of International Relations, the Ministry of Gender Equality and Child Welfare, and the Angolan Embassy, is working on a long-term solution to address the increasing number of Angolan children living on the streets in various towns.
In an interview with the Namibian Broadcasting Corporation, the Minister of Home Affairs, Immigration, Safety, and Security, Honourable Lucia Iipumbu, spoke about the ongoing efforts to resolve the issue. She shared that discussions have been extensive, and the government is committed to finding a lasting solution.
“We are heavily engaged in finding a solution, and in the next few days, we will provide more details. We ask Namibians to be patient as we work through the complexities of the situation,” Iipumbu said.
The situation has sparked public concern, with many questioning the government’s approach. Some members of the public have called for more transparency and updates on what is being done. In response, the minister acknowledged that feedback has been given on several occasions, including statements from the Prime Minister and the Ministry of Gender, but stressed that sensitive issues require a careful, behind-the-scenes approach.
“Sometimes, revealing too much too soon could hinder the process. We are working on a solution that will have a lasting impact,” she added.
Past attempts, including deportation exercises, have not solved the problem, with the children returning to the streets shortly after being removed. This time, however, authorities are determined to ensure the issue is fully addressed.
Iipumbu also mentioned that a recent undercover operation by law enforcement and immigration officers to round up the children may be part of the ongoing efforts. While specific details of the operation were not disclosed, she assured the public that all stakeholders are aware of each other’s efforts and are coordinating actions to resolve the matter.
The minister concluded by requesting more time, stating that within the next week, they would provide tangible updates once all plans and activities are finalized.
