Benguela, Angola – Eswatini’s campaign at the ANOCA Youth Games 2025 began with a narrow setback after young sprinter Mnotfo Simelane missed out on a place in the 100 metre finals in Benguela. The promising athlete clocked 11.79 seconds to finish fourth in his heat on Thursday afternoon, just shy of the qualifying positions.
The race formed part of Team Eswatini’s first track appearance at the Games, where Simelane lined up against six other competitors. Coaches who travelled with the delegation said the heat was among the most competitive of the day and noted that the youngster delivered a confident start that briefly positioned him among the front runners.
In the women’s 100 metre event, Sikhanyiso Dlamini completed her heat at the back of the field but maintained her form under pressure. Team officials said her participation at this stage is vital for gaining international exposure and learning to navigate high intensity races.
Both athletes entered the track shortly after 1600 hours following structured warm up sessions overseen by the coaching team. Their preparations are part of a broader plan aimed at building capacity among Eswatini’s youth sprinters at continental level.
The delegation now shifts its attention to Siphosethu Gamedze, whose event schedule is still to be confirmed. Team Eswatini has encouraged supporters back home to keep an eye on updates as the competition progresses.
