Bloemfontein – Mamelodi Sundowns battled back from a first-half deficit to secure a 1-1 draw against Siwelele FC in a Betway Premiership match at Dr Petrus Molemela Stadium on Wednesday night.
Vincent Pule gave the home side the lead in the 27th minute following a defensive error between Kegan Johannes and Sundowns goalkeeper Ronwen Williams. Pule capitalised on a loose back-pass and a missed clearance to put Siwelele ahead despite Sundowns controlling much of the possession.
Sundowns struggled to find fluency after a demanding trip to Algeria, where they drew 0-0 with MC Alger in the CAF Champions League last Friday. The introduction of veteran midfielder Themba Zwane in the second half helped the champions regain momentum, and substitute Lebo Mothiba scored with 15 minutes remaining to level the score. Sundowns’ night was further complicated when Teboho Mokoena received a second yellow card in the 81st minute.
The draw leaves Sundowns in second place with 26 points, two behind leaders Orlando Pirates, who have a game in hand. The premiership will pause for the festive season and resume after the Africa Cup of Nations concludes in mid-January.
