Pongola, South Africa – Reverend Thulasizwe D. Buthelezi has been appointed as the Traditional Prime Minister of the Zulu Kingdom, following a formal ceremony held on 2 December at Imbube Lodge in Pongola. The appointment was announced by the Zulu Royal House and attended by senior royals, Queen Sihle Mdhluli kaMawewe, members of the Eswatini Royal Family and officials from the King’s Private Office.
The ceremony included the administration of the oath by Royal Chaplain Canon H. Mbatha, where Reverend Buthelezi pledged to serve with integrity and loyalty while upholding the authority of King Misuzulu kaZwelithini. His mandate places him as the chief executive authority beneath His Majesty, responsible for overseeing administrative affairs and representing the Monarch in governmental and developmental engagements.
A major outcome of the appointment is the creation of the Prime Minister’s Executive Council, described as the highest decision making structure of the Zulu Kingdom. The Council is set to guide coordination, governance and all strategic engagements involving the Kingdom. It consists of the Traditional Prime Minister as chairperson, the Deputy Prime Minister, the King’s Representative to the House of Traditional Leaders, the Royal Chancellor and the Head of the Private Office who will serve as secretariat.
According to the mandate, no project or policy will proceed without the Council’s approval, a move expected to enforce structured decision making and ensure that all initiatives align with the King’s cultural and developmental vision. The PMEC will also strengthen relations with Amakhosi, traditional councils and various institutions interacting with the Zulu Kingdom.
Reverend Buthelezi committed himself to serve faithfully and to protect the authority of King Misuzulu, noting his obligation to act with impartiality and discipline in all duties assigned to him.
