Africa has cemented its rising influence in global sport as Uganda’s Dr Donald Rukare was elected President of Commonwealth Sport, becoming the first African to lead the organisation.
The Eswatini Olympic and Commonwealth Games Association (EOCGA) has congratulated team Uganda and celebrated the milestone as a major step forward for the continent.
Dr Rukare’s election, confirmed during the Commonwealth Sport General Assembly, comes shortly after Zimbabwe’s Kirsty Coventry became the first African to assume the Presidency of the International Olympic Committee. For the first time in history, the world’s two major multi-sport institutions are simultaneously headed by African leaders.
EOCGA said this dual breakthrough demonstrates Africa’s growing capability, unity, and strategic influence in global sports governance. The association added that Dr Rukare’s appointment reflects the trust and confidence placed in him by all 74 member nations and territories.
The organisation further noted that his leadership is expected to inspire emerging sports administrators across Africa and strengthen the continent’s voice within global sporting structures.
EOCGA wished Dr Rukare success in his new role, emphasising that his achievement marks a defining moment for African sports leadership and represents a powerful symbol of progress for the Commonwealth sporting family.
