Durban – Orlando Pirates moved to the top of the Betway Premiership table after a 2-0 victory over 10-man Durban City FC at Moses Mabhida Stadium on Saturday. The win lifted the Buccaneers three points clear of Mamelodi Sundowns, with both sides having played 12 league games. Durban City dropped to eighth following the defeat.
The Buccaneers’ first goal came in the 23rd minute when Evidence Makgopa converted a precise cross from Relebohile Mofokeng, sending Durban City goalkeeper Darren Keet the wrong way. It marked Makgopa’s second goal in consecutive matches, bringing his season tally to four goals and three assists across all competitions.
Durban City had early chances but struggled to find a clinical finish, while Pirates maintained control. In the second half, Mofokeng nearly set up another goal for Tshepang Moremi, but Keet made a vital save. Later, a defensive misstep almost allowed Pirates another goal, though Moremi failed to capitalise on the opportunity.
The match saw a worrying incident when Durban City striker Jean Lwamba was taken to hospital after a collision with Mbekezeli Mbokazi. Despite the scare, Pirates extended their lead in the 77th minute when substitute Oswin Appollis slotted home a low cross from Patrick Maswanganyi, who had returned to the starting line-up.
Durban City finished the game with 10 men after captain Siphamandla Ncanana received a red card in stoppage time.
Pirates now lead the Premiership ahead of the 2025 AFCON break, putting themselves in a strong position for the title race when league action resumes in January.
