Addis Ababa, Ethiopia — The first African Media Awards will take place in Addis Ababa on 4 December 2025, recognising outstanding journalism and storytelling from across the continent. The event aims to showcase African narratives and promote media excellence in both traditional and digital platforms.
The awards have been organised by a coalition of Pan-African institutions, including the African Union of Broadcasting, the Patrice Emery Lumumba Foundation, the Kwame Nkrumah Foundation, and the Mwalimu Nyerere Foundation. Together, they hope to celebrate the contributions of media professionals shaping Africa’s voice in global discourse.
Nine categories have been created to reflect the diversity and evolution of African media. These include outstanding news report, interview, documentary, current affairs programme, Afro-centric entertainment, video production, social media video, social media video on current affairs, and short social media video. Submissions must have first aired in 2024 or later to ensure relevance and contemporary storytelling standards.
Top three nominees in each category will be invited to the gala ceremony in Addis Ababa, with travel and accommodation fully covered by the organisers. All nominees will receive a $2,000 cash prize, while winners in each category will be awarded the Golden Alkebulan trophy and $6,000 in prize money.
The awards are open to media organisations, television channels, independent content creators, and bloggers across Africa. Judges, comprised of industry leaders, will evaluate entries based on editorial quality, creativity, production value, and impact.
