MBABANE – With just four days remaining before Saturday’s Mbabane Marathon, experts are urging competitors to focus on careful preparation rather than last-minute training pushes. The race will start at Prince of Wales, with over 2 000 athletes expected to compete across various categories.
Coaches warn that travel plans, pre-race nerves, and weather can lead to errors in the final days. Athletes are advised to taper mileage and intensity, allowing the body to recover from months of training. Light jogs, mobility exercises, and easy runs are recommended, while overtraining may cause fatigue instead of improved performance.
Hydration and sleep are being stressed as key factors. Runners should increase fluid intake throughout the week rather than relying on race-day water and prioritise uninterrupted rest to support recovery, reduce inflammation, and sharpen mental focus.
Nutrition advice encourages competitors to stick to familiar meals, focusing on balanced diets and whole grains while avoiding sugary or highly processed foods that could upset the stomach on race day.
Organisers also recommend early logistical preparation, including laying out race gear, arranging transport, and checking hydration and energy supplies. Mental readiness, such as visualising pacing strategies and anticipating challenges along the route, is equally important.
Experts say discipline, calm, and focus in the final days may make the difference in tackling the demanding course, including challenging uphill sections, while taking in the scenic views along the route.
