Johannesburg – Brown Mogotsi told the Madlanga commission that he was a member of Umkhonto We Sizwe between 1993 and 1995 before becoming a contact agent for crime intelligence.
Mogotsi explained that a contact agent is recruited by a crime intelligence officer, known as a handler, and is expected to build a network of sources and informants to carry out assignments. He said contact agents operate without any official identity and act as intermediaries between intelligence officers and undercover operatives, passing on information, instructions, or resources while ensuring the secrecy and safety of communication channels.
The commission heard that Mogotsi is alleged to have served as a middleman between suspended South African Police Minister Senzo Mchunu and alleged crime cartel member Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala. He reportedly facilitated R500,000 from Matlala to cover flights and accommodation for eight ANC members attending a fundraising gala dinner ahead of the party’s January 8 event in Cape Town this year. In return, Matlala allegedly received classified police information from Mogotsi.
Mogotsi also revealed that John Wick, who terrorised the community of Mamelodi in 2018, is Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala, and that former police minister Bheki Cele was aware of this. He further claimed that in September 2024, his informant told him Cele had a personal interest in the R360 million tender awarded to Matlala.
The commission continues to probe these claims.
