MBABANE – Condolensces for pioneering private investigator Hunter Shongwe’s family following his death this week at Pigg’s Peak Government Hospital.
Shongwe is widely remembered for his role in tackling rampant theft in the textile sector as well as serving his clients with private investigator (PI) work.
The investigator was receiving treatment at the Piggs Peak Government Hospital. He had recently disclosed to the Times of Eswatini journalists that he suffered from complications related to a stomach ulcer. His passing has sparked an outpouring of sympathy on social media, with many describing him as outspoken, fearless and exceptionally skilled in security matters.
He rose to prominence while working with textile companies, where he was frequently called in to investigate large-scale theft of finished garments. In one notable case, he uncovered the systematic disappearance of hundreds of items at the now-defunct Knit-Wear Textile factory losses that had occurred piece by piece rather than in a single raid. Management credited him for helping identify how the thefts were being carried out.
Mourners described him as a hero and father figure who dedicated himself to helping others recover stolen belongings and bring offenders to justice.
“You will be greatly missed for your unwavering dedication and courage,” said one mourner.
His sister, Queen, said the family was devastated by the loss. She recalled spending days with him at the Mbabane Government Hospital during one of his earlier illnesses.
“We loved him and always cherished being around him. His family and children are all heartbroken,” she said.
The family is still finalising funeral arrangements. The late investigator was also a long-standing member of the Jericho Church and was known for speaking openly on church matters, especially around the time of the major split over two decades ago.
