MBABANE — Outgoing MTN Eswatini Chief Executive Officer, Mr. Wandile Mtshali, has been hailed by the Premier League of Eswatini (PLE) for his transformative contribution to local football during his five-year tenure.
In a statement issued on Thursday, the PLE expressed deep appreciation for Mtshali’s leadership, which significantly strengthened the partnership between the telecommunications company and the football league. His tenure, the PLE noted, was marked by vision, collaboration, and a firm commitment to advancing professional football in the country.
Mtshali played a pivotal role in ensuring that the league remained active during the COVID-19 pandemic, a time when many organisations were forced to withdraw or scale down sponsorships. MTN Eswatini, under his guidance, stood by the football community, ensuring that players, clubs, and fans continued to experience the spirit of the game despite difficult conditions.
His leadership also ushered in key milestones for the sport, including an increased sponsorship package for the 2022–2025 period and the landmark E22.5 million renewal for the 2025–2028 seasons. The latter, achieved during his final year in office, stands as one of the most significant corporate investments in Eswatini football to date.
Beyond financial support, Mtshali championed a progressive, open-minded sponsorship approach that welcomed co-sponsorships, thereby broadening the league’s commercial horizons and improving its long-term sustainability.
“Mr. Mtshali’s impact on football will be felt for years to come,” read part of the PLE’s message. “His leadership, partnership, and friendship have left an indelible mark on the professionalisation of the game in Eswatini.”
As he embarks on the next phase of his career, the PLE wished him continued success and expressed hope that he will remain a visible supporter in local stadiums, celebrating the sport he helped elevate.
