MBABANE – Eswatini has made continental history after the Royal Eswatini Sugar Corporation’s (RESCorp) Simunye mill became the first in Africa to receive the internationally recognised Bonsucro certification.
The certification, which covers sugarcane supplied from Tabankulu Estate, places Eswatini among global leaders in sustainable sugar production. Bonsucro is a worldwide multi-stakeholder standard that promotes ethical, social, and environmental best practices in the sugar industry. It ensures that sugar producers meet stringent criteria tied to fair labour, responsible sourcing, and environmental protection, making certified producers more attractive to international buyers.
During the official handover ceremony, Tabankulu Estate Managing Director Chris Shabangu reflected on the journey that began in 2015, describing it as long and demanding. “The process was not easy. There were moments we almost gave up, but our persistence and commitment to doing things the right way have paid off,” he said.
Shabangu added that the certification carries great responsibility, as other African sugar producers will now look to Eswatini as a benchmark for excellence.
RESCorp Managing Director Nick Jackson described the milestone as a major step forward for Eswatini’s sugar industry, saying the certification will help the country tap into new international markets. “We will use this certification to our advantage to open more markets for the local sugar industry. It’s big in countries like Brazil and Australia, and now Eswatini stands among them,” he said.
