LOBAMBA – “I’m a starter and a finisher,” declared Nelisiwe Magongo from Mbowane, moments after crossing the finish line to become the first Eswatini woman ever to win the 42 km category of the prestigious Imbube Marathon.
Magongo, who pocketed a total of E47,500 in prize money, achieved the remarkable feat in what was also her first-ever 42 km race. Despite being new to the distance, she said determination and discipline carried her through the gruelling route.
“It’s my first time doing 42 km, although I’ve done two official marathons in India, where I was doing my master’s in public health. This was my third marathon,” she shared with a proud smile.
However, the journey was far from easy. Magongo vividly recalled the punishing Malagwane Hill stretch, describing it as the toughest part of the race.
“That 6 km up Malagwane was just too much for me. I actually died three times and woke up and got back alive,” she said, laughing as she relived the moment.
Her story is one of discipline and resilience. She revealed that even harsh weather conditions never stopped her from training.
“At times I would train when it’s raining. I’d put on my shower cap, wear my windbreaker and running shoes, and then hit the road. If you really know what you want, you’re going to work hard for it,” she said.
Reflecting on her mindset, Magongo described herself as driven and meticulous. “I’m a starter and a finisher. I think I’m a perfectionist also, because when I start something, I want it to be perfect,” she added.
Her victory not only writes her name in the Imbube Marathon’s history books but also stands as a powerful message to aspiring runners—that with discipline, passion, and perseverance, even the toughest hills can be conquered.
