Liverpool – Manchester United stunned Liverpool with a 2–1 victory at Anfield on Sunday evening, ending a nine-year winless run at the Merseyside ground. Harry Maguire’s decisive header in the closing minutes sealed the triumph that reignited United’s Premier League campaign and handed Liverpool their first home defeat in over a year.
Bryan Mbeumo fired the visitors ahead just 62 seconds into the match after a precise through-ball from Amad Diallo. The Cameroonian forward’s calm finish silenced Anfield, setting the tone for a fiery contest between two of England’s fiercest rivals.
Liverpool responded with relentless pressure, with Cody Gakpo twice hitting the post in the first half and once again after the break. United goalkeeper Senne Lammens endured several anxious moments but managed to keep his side in front until the 78th minute, when Gakpo finally levelled for the Reds from close range after Federico Chiesa’s assist.
Just as it seemed the momentum had swung Liverpool’s way, Maguire rose highest to meet Bruno Fernandes’ looping cross in the 84th minute, guiding his header beyond Giorgi Mamardashvili. The goal triggered wild celebrations among the United players and travelling supporters.
The win marked United’s first league victory at Anfield since January 2016 and ended Liverpool’s 400-day unbeaten home streak. Former United midfielder Michael Carrick described the result as “incredible for the boys, for the club, and for the manager,” adding that it would give the squad a huge confidence boost.
Liverpool have now suffered three straight Premier League defeats, a worrying run for Arne Slot’s side as the title race tightens. United, meanwhile, will take confidence from a performance that combined early intensity, defensive grit, and late composure to earn a famous victory.
