Lilongwe – The Malawian Ministry of Foreign Affairs is working closely with South African authorities following a bus accident in Limpopo Province on Sunday, 12 October, 2025, that killed 42 people and left 41 injured.
The bus, travelling from the Eastern Cape to Harare, carried both Malawian and Zimbabwean passengers. It reportedly lost control on a steep section of the road, rolled several times, and plunged into an embankment. Among the deceased were 18 women, 17 men, and seven children, including a 10-month-old baby.
Malawian officials confirmed that 22 of their nationals were on board. Fourteen have been accounted for: eight are receiving hospital treatment while six have been discharged. Eight Malawians remain missing. The Ministry noted that the exact number of casualties by nationality will be confirmed once forensic identification is complete.
Officials from the Malawi High Commission in Pretoria, led by High Commissioner Stella Ndau, visited the accident site on Monday to assess the situation and support affected nationals. They were accompanied by South Africa’s Minister of Transport, Barbara Creecy, and the Zimbabwean Ambassador, David Hamadziripi.
The Ministry is providing consular assistance and ensuring that all Malawians involved in the accident receive medical care. It expressed condolences to the families of the deceased and pledged to remain on the ground until all necessary processes are completed.
