MBABANE – A 36-year-old man has been ordered to pay a fine of E1,200 or face 10 months in prison after admitting to killing his neighbour’s goat.
Sicelo Nkosinathi Mnisi appeared in the Mbabane Magistrate’s Court on charges of malicious damage to property after he intentionally struck a kid goat valued at E2,800, owned by Majaha Sibandze. Mnisi used an unknown weapon, resulting in the goat’s death, according to the charge sheet.
In court, Mnisi expressed that his actions stemmed from frustration over Sibandze’s goats, which he claimed were a persistent nuisance in his yard. He pleaded guilty and explained that the animals had damaged numerous items around his home, including household goods.
“Even things like soap left outside would be eaten,” he stated. Mnisi also mentioned that despite his repeated complaints, Sibandze failed to control the goats, which ultimately led to his anger.
When given the opportunity to mitigate his sentence, Mnisi expressed deep regret for his actions and asked for leniency, emphasizing that he is the sole provider for his family. He shared that he is unemployed and relies on odd jobs, making it challenging to support his household.
After considering his circumstances and remorse, the court acknowledged his situation but made it clear that taking the law into one’s own hands is not permissible. The magistrate then imposed a fine of E1,200 or a 10-month prison term in default of payment.
