JOHANNESBURG – Microsoft has appointed Vukani Mngxati as the new Chief Executive Officer of its South African operations, effective immediately. He succeeds Lillian Barnard, who recently became chief of enterprise partners for Microsoft Middle East and Africa.
Mngxati will oversee Microsoft’s operations in South Africa, focusing on expanding cloud infrastructure, developing artificial intelligence skills in local communities, and building partnerships aligned with national development priorities. He brings more than 25 years of experience in enterprise modernisation and strategic innovation, having held several leadership roles at Accenture, including CEO and board chairman for Africa, and pursuing entrepreneurial ventures earlier in his career.
“Stepping into this role in Microsoft South Africa is a deeply meaningful and proud moment for me,” Mngxati said. “I’m excited to help businesses – public and private, large and small – unlock their full potential through cloud and AI technologies.”
Mngxati’s appointment comes as Microsoft continues its infrastructure expansion in South Africa. In March, the company announced a further R5.4-billion investment in AI-optimised data centres to support compute-intensive workloads, including large-scale AI and machine learning projects. The new facilities will complement Microsoft’s existing Azure footprint, where the company has already invested over R20-billion locally.
