LOBAMBA — Nsingizini Hotspurs of Eswatini earned a dramatic passage to the next stage of the CAF Champions League, defeating Zimbabwe’s Simba Bhora FC 4-2 in a nerve-wracking penalty shootout at Somhlolo National Stadium yesterday.
The second-leg preliminary round ended in a 1-1 aggregate draw, forcing spot-kicks that saw the Eswatini champions advance. This victory sets up a thrilling two-legged encounter against Tanzanian giants Simba SC, with a potential E12 million prize and a place in the group stage on the line.
Trailing by a single goal from the first leg, Nsingizini faced intense pressure to score while keeping a clean sheet. Coach Mandla Qhogi made tactical shifts to regain control, but early urgency led to errors. Just before the half-hour mark, the team was awarded a penalty. Mavela Dlamini’s attempt soared over the crossbar, drawing gasps from the home crowd. Qhogi immediately substituted Dlamini to restore composure.
Simba Bhora, making their continental debut, played a measured, disciplined game, relying on their aggregate advantage. Coach Joel Luphahla described the elimination as a tough lesson, citing inexperience and mental fatigue as key factors. He said missed opportunities in both legs prevented his team from securing the tie, but he noted that the experience would strengthen the squad for domestic competitions and future continental campaigns.
The second half became a relentless battle, with Nsingizini pressing against a resolute Simba Bhora defence. Substitutions, including the introduction of Sambulo Simelane, injected renewed energy. Just as the visitors seemed certain to advance, the 90th minute produced a moment of drama. Simelane delivered a corner kick that found defender Nkosingiphile, whose stunning half-volley beat keeper William Thole, forcing the match into penalties.
During the shootout, Nsingizini’s penalty takers, including experienced players ‘Tiger’ and Simelane, maintained composure, while Simba Bhora faltered, missing two attempts. The final 4-2 score confirmed Nsingizini’s advancement.
Coach Qhogi praised his squad’s fortitude, noting that preparing for the possibility of a penalty shootout had been a deliberate part of their strategy. Nsingizini Hotspurs now focus on their toughest challenge yet, the upcoming tie against Simba SC.
