Mbabane – The Central Bank of Eswatini is preparing to introduce a national electronic Know Your Customer system as part of efforts to expand financial inclusion and strengthen security in the country.
Deputy Governor Felicia Dlamini-Kunene yesterday opened a high-level meeting in Mbabane attended by commercial banks, regulators, financial service providers and government ministries. The gathering was convened to align existing systems ahead of the launch of the national e-KYC registry.
Through the digital platform, citizens will be able to verify their identities electronically, a move expected to make it easier for those without bank accounts to access formal financial services. The system will also streamline access to government programmes and benefits while giving law enforcement agencies a stronger tool to track and investigate financial crimes.
Dlamini-Kunene told participants that the Central Bank is also exploring the feasibility of a regional e-KYC registry. She explained that such a platform would allow secure, real-time cross-border identity verification and pave the way for a regional payments infrastructure within the Southern African Development Community.
