Mbabane – Acting Minister for Natural Resources and Energy, Appolo Maphalala, officially commissioned the Ekukhanyeni Water Scheme, marking a major milestone in the community’s development journey.
The initiative, developed over 16 years with funding from World Vision Eswatini and its support offices in Germany and Italy, has significantly improved water access across five communities, including local schools and clinics.
Acting Minister Maphalala reported that access to safe water in Ekukhanyeni has risen from 46.7 percent in 2010 to 76 percent in 2025. He noted that this improvement has reduced the daily burden on women and children who previously walked long distances to collect unsafe water and has contributed to better health, education, and child protection outcomes.
The water scheme is part of a broader development effort that includes 13 protected springs, boreholes, and sanitation facilities throughout the Inkhundla. Acting Minister Maphalala acknowledged the importance of partnership in driving community development and commended the collaboration of local leadership, government ministries, and World Vision Eswatini in making the project successful.
He also praised the resilience of the communities, noting that the reticulated water supply system has transformed the lives of residents and positively impacted the well-being of vulnerable children in the area.
