Mbabane – British rock band Coldplay is set to extend its record-breaking Music of the Spheres world tour to southern Africa, with strong indications that South Africa will be on the list when new dates begin in 2027.
Frontman Chris Martin told fans at Wembley Stadium during the closing shows of the current tour that the group would resume their performances “somewhere in southern Africa in about 18 months.” The remark has sparked speculation that South Africa will host the opening leg of the extension, as it remains the band’s most established southern African stop for large-scale stadium shows.
The Music of the Spheres tour began in March 2022 and has already staged 211 concerts, drawing more than 13 million fans worldwide and generating ticket sales worth over R25 billion. Industry reports rank it as the second-highest-grossing tour in history, trailing only Taylor Swift’s Eras tour.

The new leg, scheduled from 2027, is expected to add 138 shows, with each performance generating about £5 million (R125 million). Analysts say the expanded schedule could see Coldplay surpass Swift’s tour as the highest-grossing ever staged.
Africa is the only continent, apart from Antarctica, that Coldplay skipped on this tour. Their last South African appearance was in 2011, with concerts in Cape Town and Johannesburg. If the band confirms dates, it will mark their first return to the continent in 14 years, a moment long anticipated by fans across the region.
