SOUTH AFRICA – Bafana Bafana’s crucial 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier against Rwanda is likely to be staged at the Mbombela Stadium, with strong indications that the Mpumalanga venue is the preferred choice for the match.
While the South African Minister of Sport, Arts and Culture, Gayton McKenzie, took to the X (formerly Twitter) platform suggesting the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium in Gqeberha as a possibility, sources close to the South African Football Association (SAFA) have confirmed that Mbombela has emerged as the front runner.
The decision has yet to be officially confirmed by the SAFA, and logistical and operational factors could still lead to a change of venue. However, the Mpumalanga stadium’s selection would be a major development for the province and provide Hugo Bros’s side with a vibrant home-ground advantage as they push for a World Cup berth. The venue’s popularity as a footballing destination will be further showcased this coming weekend as it hosts the sold-out MTN8 final between Orlando Pirates and Stellenbosch FC.
Bafana Bafana’s qualification hopes were significantly boosted by a hard-fought 1-1 draw against arch-rivals Nigeria at the Free State Stadium in Bloemfontein. The result places coach Hugo Broos’s men at the top of Group C with 19 points, eight clear of second-placed Benin, who defeated Lesotho in their latest outing.
The South African squad is now in a commanding position to secure a spot at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, and a home fixture against Rwanda provides a strong opportunity to solidify their place at the top of the group.
Mbombela Stadium, with its striking architectural design, has a proven track record of hosting major events, including matches during the 2010 FIFA World Cup. The stadium’s selection for the MTN8 final and the potential World Cup qualifier highlights its status as a premier sports venue in the country.
