Johannesburg – Orlando Pirates’ teenage defender Mbekezeli Mbokazi has caught the attention of Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos, who described the 19-year-old as a rare talent he has not encountered in his four years leading South Africa’s national team.
Mbokazi’s standout performances have secured him a place in the squad for the upcoming FIFA World Cup qualifiers, with Broos suggesting the young defender could soon attract interest from European clubs.
Despite his age, Mbokazi has already captained Orlando Pirates in the absence of Nkosinathi Sibisi, showing leadership and composure on the field. Broos said the defender’s maturity and fearless style set him apart.
“From the beginning, he showed a very mature attitude. He’s confident, strong, technically sound, and plays without fear. This is special for a young player,” Broos said.
The national coach added that Mbokazi’s smooth adaptation during friendly matches confirmed his inclusion in the squad. “I never doubted for one second when I made the list not to take him. In my four years here, I’ve never seen a young defender like this,” he said.
Broos believes another season in the DStv Premiership, especially if Pirates compete in the Champions League, will further develop Mbokazi’s potential. “If it goes on like this, this is a guy who has to go to Europe, certainly with the skills and quality he has,” he said.
