Mbabane – The Komati Basin Water Authority (KOBWA) has announced an E75,000 sponsorship for the Hhohho Regional Football Association (HRFA), a move aimed at developing football at the grassroots level.
The sponsorship will fund a knockout tournament for teams in the Piggs Peak regional league and support junior football development. This initiative is part of KOBWA’s corporate social responsibility efforts, announced during an event held Tuesday at their Maguga offices.
KOBWA Chief Executive Officer, Trevor Shongwe, explained that the sponsorship is a way of giving back to the community and believes the games will help deter young people from crime and drug abuse. Shongwe expressed his hope for a long-term partnership with the HRFA, stating, “We are pleased to announce an E75,000 sponsorship for teams under the Piggs Peak constituency… We look forward to having a long-standing relationship with the Hhohho Regional Football Association.”
Comfort Shongwe, Chairman of the HRFA, thanked KOBWA for the support, highlighting its importance for the development of sports in Eswatini. He stressed that football is a valuable investment for companies as it creates employment opportunities for the youth. The chairman also voiced his hope that the sports bill would soon be passed in parliament to help professionalize the industry.
Piggs Peak Member of Parliament, Jabulani Mabuza, also praised the sponsorship, echoing the sentiment that the tournament will provide a platform to discover new talent at the grassroots level while keeping the youth engaged in positive activities. He noted, “We appreciate the support of the sponsor, as the tournament will keep the youth away from crime and drug abuse. This will also be a platform to unearth talent at the grassroots level.”
Of the total sponsorship, E50,000 will be used to run the knockout tournament for the Piggs Peak regional league, while the remaining E25,000 will be allocated to junior football development. The event was attended by the HRFA delegation and MP Mabuza, among other dignitaries.
